Kos is located in the east and is one of the most popular islands in Greece.
The Mediterranean climate prevails here‚ giving you plenty of sunshine and peak temperatures of around 40 degrees in the summer months. Winters on the island are also rather mild and you can expect little to no rain until the end of October. Like many Greek islands‚ the landscape of Kos is characterized by a mountain range‚ the Dikeos massif. In the north of the island‚ the massif flattens out and the fertile soil in the region is used for agriculture.
Kos is known for its many beautiful sandy beaches.
The Greek beauty offers you a variety of fine sandy beaches in the southwest but also some pebble beaches in the east of the island. So you are sure to find the perfect beach for you on Kos.
We recommend the natural beach of Tigáki in the north‚ or the beach of Kephalos in the southwest of the island. Here you will find fine sand‚ crystal-clear water and the odd beach bar.
If you like a bit of action and want to get active‚ Paradise Beach is the place for you. The beach is known for its wide range of sports activities‚ tavernas and entertainment options. The Agios Stefanos Beach and Lagada Beach‚ in the west of the island‚ are particularly suitable for families. A fairytale setting‚ crystal-clear water and beaches that slope gently into the sea await you there.
The constantly blowing summer wind Meltemi not only offers beach vacationers a little refreshment‚ it also attracts water sports fans to the island. Ideal wind conditions prevail in the bay of Kamari‚ making it a magnet for catamaran sailors and surfers. If you don't have your own surfboard‚ you can rent one here and inexperienced surfers can take a course.
Kos offers many other highlights in addition to its beaches.
Did you know‚ for example‚ that it is also known as the island of Hippocrates? He was a Greek doctor and is even considered the most famous physician of antiquity. Hippocrates‚ who was born on Kos‚ is also known as the „father of (modern) medicine“ and is still revered by the islanders today.
The island offers history buffs many impressive Greek and Roman legacies from days gone by. A visit to Kos Town reveals that the harbour town is characterized by the Fortress of Neratzia‚ which dates back to the 15th century.
After a stroll through the small alleyways‚ a shopping tour in the local boutiques and a drink in one of the quaint tavernas‚ you will find the ancient Agora ruins south of the fortress‚ which are home to a shrine‚ a temple and well-preserved columns. You might also like to visit the Casa Romana‚ a reconstructed Roman villa that originally dates back to the 3rd century.
Near the city of Kos‚ you can admire the largest and probably most important archaeological site on the island‚ the Asklepieion‚ on a hill. It was dedicated to the god of healing and was a kind of health resort and hospital. The individual components of the ancient building date from various centuries before Christ.
You would rather experience the island's nature? Then visit the Salt Lake Alikes near Tigaki. Here you can observe flamingos in the wild. The island's treasures can also be explored on an extensive bike tour or hike. Spring and fall are particularly suitable for this‚ as the temperatures are much more pleasant then.
The island of Kos is of volcanic origin‚ which is why you will find hot thermal springs here. The Embros Thermal Baths invite you to take a warm bath.
Do you like it even more secluded? Then visit the village of Agios Dimitrios. The little village was completely deserted for years and life is only slowly returning.
It is also worth visiting the original neighboring islands of Kalymnos and Nisyros on a day trip and getting to know the „real“ Greek life here.
Families and water park fans can enjoy an unforgettable day out at the Lido Water Park in the north of the island.
Be inspired by the island's typical cuisine and try the dishes on offer‚ from revithokéftedes (potato pancakes or chickpea pancakes) to spanakótiró pittes (strudel dumplings filled with spinach and goat's cheese) and the Kokorétsi (lamb or goat offal wrapped in its intestines to form a sausage and grilled over charcoal)‚ which is grilled in the cooler seasons.
